Presentation abstract: This presentation covers ASM architecture, ASM metadata, ASM-to-ASM and ASM-to-DB communication in a detailed manner. It describes where ASM is placed within Oracle storage technology stack. It explains in detail how ASM metadata is organized on ASM disks, how medata structures can be classified, accessed and modified. The aim is to give participants a good understanding of how Oracle manages ASM processes, files, and their data in ASM and Exadata systems. It will also include a short workshop for the steps to create a fake ASM instance with plain OS files instead of real disks, then show how to use ASM internal tools like kfed, amdu etc. The overall presentation will be very beneficial for people interested in ASM internals and want to create ASM playgrounds easily.

Speaker biography: Levent Yavuz joined Oracle in 1997. He spent more than 15 years within Oracle Global Support while working at all roles from 1st level support to Bug,Diagnostic and Escalations (BDE) engineer. He is specialized deeply on Oracle ASM and Exadata at architectural level and have broad understanding on Oracle internals and skills on debugging and troubleshooting complex escalated issues. He worked also in Oracle Advanced Customer Support being a major implementor of large Exadata deployment, and migration projects for two years. Then, he joined to Oracle development organization (Server Technologies) being an senior principal software developer in Oracle Maximum High Availability, X-Team.
